The global wind industry continues to consolidate its strategic role in the energy transition, especially at a time of geopolitical tension and volatile energy markets. In this context, Spain is set to become the epicenter of European wind energy with the celebration of the annual WindEurope event in Madrid from April 21 to 23, a key gathering that will shape the sector’s next steps.
This was one of the main topics addressed on April 14 in a new episode of Ondas del Viento, the radio program dedicated to the wind sector broadcast on Capital Radio.
Madrid at the heart of Europe’s wind debate
The timing of WindEurope’s annual event could not be more critical. With growing concerns about fossil fuel dependency, supply chain disruptions and regulatory bottlenecks, the industry faces a decisive period. More than 16,000 policymakers, industry experts and representatives from over 600 companies are expected to gather in Madrid to tackle the most pressing challenges.
Among the key issues on the agenda are permitting bottlenecks, grid development constraints, access to financing, the fight against disinformation and the strengthening of Europe’s wind supply chain. These topics are particularly relevant as Europe accelerates the deployment of both onshore and offshore wind turbines to meet its climate and energy security targets.
The program featured in-depth analysis with Juan Virgilio Márquez, CEO of AEE (Spanish Wind Energy Association), and Olivier Wykes, COO of WindEurope, who shared their insights on the current landscape and the strategic importance of collaboration between governments and industry players. The episode was hosted by Sandra Torrecillas and Piluca Núñez, who guided the discussion through the sector’s most urgent priorities.
A strategic moment for energy security
Beyond being a major industry gathering, the Madrid event symbolizes Europe’s determination to reinforce its leadership in renewable energy. Wind power is already one of the continent’s main sources of electricity generation, and further expansion is essential to achieving the objectives of ODS 7: Affordable and Clean Energy and ODS 13: Climate Action.
Bringing together thousands of decision-makers in one place accelerates dialogue and concrete action. In a scenario where energy independence is increasingly linked to geopolitical stability, strengthening Europe’s wind capacity is not just an environmental priority it is a strategic necessity.
As the sector evolves, events like WindEurope and platforms such as Ondas del Viento play a vital role in connecting stakeholders, sharing knowledge and anticipating the next phase of growth. The question is no longer whether wind energy will be central to Europe’s future, but how fast and how effectively the industry can scale to meet rising expectations.
