Control of Hazardous Energies

The CoHE – Control of Hazardous Energies standard is the official GWO course for the prevention of risks in maintenance tasks of electrical and hydraulic systems in a wind turbine.

The CoHE is focused on workers in the wind sector who have to perform activities in the environment of a wind turbine, especially if they have to work with electrical or hydraulic systems, whether in onshore or offshore wind farms.

The GWO CoHE – Control of Hazardous Energies course currently consists of three modules:

  • Basic Safety Module: a course to act safely when working near hazardous energies in the wind industry.
  • Electrical Safety Module: a course to act safely while performing work with electricity and in its vicinity in the wind industry, and to safely perform assigned electrical work tasks.
  • Pressure Hydraulics Safety Module: a course to act safely while performing work with pressurized fluids or in their vicinity in the wind industry.

To take the course, you need to:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • be in good physical and mental shape

The course lasts for 22 hours (three days) and is conducted in training centers accredited by GWO. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate that is valid for two years and allows you to work in any wind installation that follows the GWO standard.

Prerequisites:

The Electrical Safety (ES) module and the Pressure-Related Fluid Safety (PFS) module have the following prerequisites for completion:

  • Electrical Safety: Basic Safety Module and BTT Electricity Module (BTTE)
  • Pressure-Related Fluid Safety: Basic Safety Module and BTT Hydraulics Module (BTTH)

*For both modules, work experience related to the field is also recommended.

Basic Safety in Control of Hazardous Energies

Basic Safety in Control of Hazardous Energies

BaSC

The GWO Basic Safety in Control of Hazardous Energy course provides you with the knowledge and skills necessary to work safely near hazardous energies in the wind industry and be able to perform assigned tasks safely.

The course lasts for 4 hours (half a day) and grants you an official certification that is valid for 24 months.

The Basic Safety in Control of Hazardous Energy module prepares you to:

  • Act safely when working near hazardous energies in the wind industry and seek guidance on your own initiative when necessary.
Electrical Safety

Electrical Safety

ES

The GWO Electrical Safety course provides you with the knowledge and skills necessary to take care of yourself and others while working with electricity and in its proximity in the wind industry, and to perform assigned electrical work tasks safely and efficiently.

The course lasts for 11 hours (one and a half days) and grants you an official certification that is valid for 24 months.

The Electrical Safety module prepares you to:

  • Take responsibility for your own safety and that of others while working with and near electricity in the wind industry.
  • Take responsibility for correctly filling out a simple work permit from start to finish as the person in charge of establishing safe working conditions.

Note:

The GWO Electrical Safety module aims to improve the ability of participants to “work safely” with electricity. This means that the Electrical Safety Module is not intended to improve candidates’ technical knowledge, skills, and abilities regarding electricity. Participants must already possess the necessary technical knowledge, skills, and abilities before attending the module. Similarly, the GWO CoHE – Control of Hazardous Energies standard does not aim to promote the acquisition of advanced knowledge, such as problem-solving.

Pressure Fluid Safety

PFS

The GWO Pressure Safety module provides you with the necessary knowledge and skills to take care of yourself and others while working with or near pressurized fluids in the wind industry, and to carry out assigned work tasks safely and efficiently.

The course lasts for 7 hours (one day) and grants an official certification valid for 24 months.

The Pressure Equipment Safety module prepares you to:

  • Take responsibility for your own safety and that of others while working with or near pressurized fluids in the wind energy industry. (Ability, intermediate level)
  • Assume responsibility for correctly filling out a simple work permit from start to finish as the person in charge of establishing safe working conditions. (Ability, intermediate level)

Note:

The GWO Pressure Safety Module aims to improve the participants’ ability to “work safely” with pressure fluids. This means that the pressure safety module does not aim to improve the technical knowledge, skills, and abilities of candidates regarding pressure fluids. Participants must already possess these technical knowledge, skills, and abilities before attending the module. Likewise, it is not the intention of the GWO CoHE – Control of Hazardous Energies standard to promote the acquisition of advanced knowledge, such as problem-solving.
