As wind energy continues to expand worldwide as a cornerstone of the energy transition, the relationship between renewable developers and local communities has become a strategic priority. In this context, a new episode of Ondas del Viento, the leading radio program for the wind sector on Capital Radio, has highlighted a major upcoming milestone: the presentation of the Joint Declaration of the Wind Sector and Municipalities for Sustainable Local Development on 29 May 2026 at the Spanish Congress of Deputies.

The initiative, promoted within the framework of the Foro Vecinos Eólicos, aims to strengthen coexistence between wind energy projects and host territories. The Declaration establishes a voluntary, balanced and shared framework of collaboration between project developers and local councils, reinforcing transparency and long term local value creation. Its objective is clear: to publicly demonstrate a shared commitment to sustainable territorial development in municipalities where wind farms are installed.

A new model of collaboration between companies and municipalities

During the program, presenters Sandra Torrecillas and Piluca Núñez explored the evolving relationship between municipalities and renewable energy companies. The discussion featured Erica Morales, Head of Territorial Management and Social License at STATKRAFT, and Amelia Rodríguez, Territorial Manager for Castilla La Mancha at IBERDROLA.

Both experts addressed the importance of building trust, fostering dialogue and integrating local perspectives into project planning. As wind projects grow in scale and complexity, social acceptance has become as critical as technical performance. The Joint Declaration represents a structured effort to align corporate development strategies with municipal priorities, ensuring that economic benefits, employment opportunities and infrastructure improvements are visible and measurable at the local level.

Transparency and local value in the energy transition

The presentation at the Congress of Deputies underscores the institutional relevance of this agreement. By bringing together municipalities and energy companies under a common framework, the sector is moving beyond regulatory compliance toward proactive engagement and accountability.

This approach reflects broader industry trends, where sustainable deployment of wind farms depends not only on turbine efficiency or grid integration, but also on long term territorial partnerships. In an era marked by rapid expansion of onshore and offshore wind capacity, structured cooperation mechanisms such as this Declaration can help prevent conflict, accelerate permitting processes and consolidate public trust.

From a global perspective, initiatives that reinforce collaboration between renewable developers and local governments directly support SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG 13: Climate Action. By ensuring that wind energy projects contribute tangibly to local development, the sector strengthens its role as a driver of both decarbonization and socio economic resilience. In practical terms, every well integrated wind project not only reduces emissions, but also channels investment into rural and semi rural areas that are often in need of revitalization.

The evolution of wind energy is no longer defined solely by installed megawatts. It is increasingly measured by the quality of its integration into the territory. The Joint Declaration signals that the future of the sector will be shaped as much by dialogue and cooperation as by technology and scale.
