The Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has launched an initiative to regulate the production of marine electrical energy in Spain. This Royal Decree project aims to promote offshore wind energy and other marine renewable sources, establishing a competitive procedure to allocate the economic regime of renewable energies and the concessions for the use of the terrestrial-maritime public domain.
With goals to reach up to 3 GW of offshore wind capacity and 60 MW of other marine renewable energies by 2030, this plan expects to generate significant economic activity and create approximately 40,000 jobs.
Spain, already a leader in renewable energies, stands out for its potential in marine energies, having advanced R&D facilities and being a European reference in the sector. MITECO has developed plans for the spatial planning of the maritime space, identifying zones of high potential for the installation of marine wind turbines.
This regulatory framework seeks to maximize positive externalities, considering economic, technical, and environmental impact criteria, and favoring the integration and compatibility with other maritime uses. Additionally, 147 million euros have been allocated for pilot projects and test platforms, focused on the sustainable development of marine energies.
