As wind energy expands rapidly across Spain and Europe, successfully integrating these projects into local communities is becoming paramount. The Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE) has launched the ‘Vecinos Eólicos’ (Wind Neighbours) Forum, a pioneering initiative designed to amplify the voices of those living alongside wind farms and cultivate open dialogue with the sector.
At its core, the ‘Vecinos Eólicos’ initiative establishes a dedicated platform for dialogue and encounter, aiming to place the people who coexist daily with wind energy in their municipalities at the forefront. This space seeks to foster open, constructive conversations between local communities, administrations, and wind energy companies. A central element of the launch is the accompanying publication ‘Vecinos Eólicos’, which journeys through 10 diverse municipalities across Spain that host wind farms. This book features over 50 compelling personal testimonies from residents – including mayors, farmers, bakers, and environmental monitors – offering firsthand accounts of how wind energy is integrated into their daily lives and local landscapes. Rocío Sicre, President of AEE, highlights the project’s purpose: “We want to facilitate constructive dialogue for an energy transition and get closer to the true protagonists of this transformation: the people. Understanding their opinions, concerns, and valuing their experiences is fundamental to advancing a sustainable and shared energy model.”
The forum aspires to become a permanent meeting point, emphasizing that “Wind energy is not just installed megawatts; it is, above all, life in our villages, future opportunities, and rootedness,” according to Sicre. This focus on local socio-economic benefits, such as fixing population, generating employment, and strengthening social fabric, is a vital trend in the sustainable development of renewable energy infrastructure. This community-focused approach is as crucial as technological advancements like aerogeneradores offshore or potential hibridación con hidrógeno verde for ensuring the energy transition is socially sustainable and accepted.
By fostering dialogue and understanding between the wind sector and local communities, the ‘Vecinos Eólicos’ initiative directly supports the global push towards sustainable development. It aligns with the goals of ODS 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) by promoting the integration of affordable, clean energy infrastructure and contributes significantly to ODS 13 (Climate Action) by accelerating the deployment of renewable energy necessary to mitigate climate change. This community-focused approach is crucial for ensuring the energy transition is not only technically feasible but also socially equitable and accepted.
The launch of the ‘Vecinos Eólicos’ Forum marks an important step towards a more inclusive and transparent energy transition in Spain. It prompts reflection on how future renewable energy projects can be better planned and integrated to ensure they benefit not just the national grid, but also the daily lives and future prosperity of the communities that host them. How can other sectors follow suit?
