In Spain, the wind energy sector continues its robust expansion. Wind power covered a significant 23% of national demand in 2024, solidifying its position as the leading technology in the Spanish energy mix.
According to data presented by AEE, Spain added 1,184 new megawatts to the grid in 2024, effectively doubling the installed capacity compared to the previous year. This remarkable growth highlights the country’s commitment to renewable energy.
Juan Virgilio Márquez, CEO of AEE, and Heikki Willstedt, Director of Energy Policies and Climate Change at AEE, emphasized this milestone. “Wind energy in Spain reached a significant milestone in 2024 by covering 23% of national demand and consolidating itself as the leading technology in the Spanish energy mix,” they stated. This rapid deployment is a key trend positioning wind power as the backbone of Spain’s transition to a decarbonized economy, a trend also seen with the increasing focus on aerogeneradores offshore and potential hibridación con hidrógeno verde.
This surge in wind power capacity directly contributes to global sustainability goals. By providing clean, renewable energy, Spain is making significant strides towards achieving ODS 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and ODS 13 (Climate Action), showcasing how national efforts can lead to tangible environmental benefits on a larger scale.
Spain’s wind energy performance in 2024 sets a strong precedent. What does this rapid acceleration mean for the future of renewable energy infrastructure and achieving climate targets across Europe?
