The European Commission recently set a bold new climate target for 2040. It proposes a 90% net greenhouse gas emission reduction compared to 1990 levels, reaffirming the ambition for a decarbonised European economy by 2050. This follows the release of WindEurope’s press release reacting to the EU-level implications for the wind sector.

The core proposal centers on the ambitious 90% emission reduction target for 2040. Achieving this goal involves a shift towards a more pragmatic and flexible approach compared to the 2030 target, incorporating elements like a limited role for high-quality international credits after 2036 and the integration of domestic permanent removals within the EU Emissions Trading System. A long list of greater flexibilities across all sectors is also included to help meet the targets cost-effectively and fairly.

Alongside the main proposal, the Commission also released several supporting communications and recommendations. These include insights from extensive consultations, an update on the Clean Transition Dialogue for a rapid and just industrial transition, and guidance to foster investments in clean technologies. Crucially, the recommendations also address innovative renewable technologies, specifically including floating offshore wind in their definition, highlighting its strategic importance for future energy systems. This aligns with major trends in the sector, such as the growth of aerogeneradores offshore projects and the potential for hibridación con hidrógeno verde.

This initiative directly contributes to global sustainability goals, notably ODS 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) by accelerating the deployment of renewables and phasing out fossil fuels, and ODS 13 (Climate Action) through drastic emission reductions. Achieving the 90% target means significantly more clean energy capacity and a substantial decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, paving the way for a climate-neutral future.

As this proposal moves towards debate in the Council and Parliament, the focus will be on translating this ambition into concrete policies and investments. What role will your sector play in meeting Europe’s ambitious 2040 climate target?
