Vestas Leads Wind Repowering in Castilla-La Mancha

Vestas has secured a 99 MW order for the repowering of the Molar de Molinar and Isabela wind farms, located in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. This project, led by Iberdrola, includes:

  • The supply and installation of 11 V150-4.5 MW wind turbines.
  • An additional 11 V136-4.5 MW wind turbines.
  • A 10-year Active Output Management (AOM 4000) service contract.

Increased Production and Reduced Environmental Impact

The 22 new wind turbines will replace the 139 older models, enabling:

  • A 30% increase in energy production.
  • A significant reduction in environmental impact, thanks to modern technology.

“Thanks to subsidies granted by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), Iberdrola has been able to pioneer this investment in repowering,” says José González Bujanda, Project Development Manager at Iberdrola Renewables.

Adaptation and Modernization

The project has involved:

  • Dismantling old wind farms.
  • Adapting foundations and electrical connections for the new turbines.

“Our full converter technology ensures the reliability needed in the Spanish grid, which is increasingly integrating renewable energy sources,” highlights José Luis del Cerro, Country Manager for Vestas Spain.

Repowering: A Key to Energy Transition

With over 9.9 GW of wind turbines in Spain reaching 20 years or more by 2025, repowering is becoming a critical factor for:

  • Increasing onshore wind capacity with fewer turbines.
  • Reducing environmental impact and land use.

Environmental Benefits and Local Manufacturing

Once operational, the project will achieve:

  • Avoiding 53,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.
  • Supporting the local economy through component manufacturing in Spain:
    • Blades in Daimiel (Ciudad Real).
    • Towers manufactured locally.

Since its arrival in Spain in 1991, Vestas has installed more than 5.3 GW of capacity in the country.

Key Deadlines

  • Turbine delivery: Second quarter of 2025.
  • Commissioning: Fourth quarter of 2025.

Energy Transition with Less Impact

This project is another step in decarbonization and the shift to a sustainable future, where less is more: fewer turbines, higher production, and lower environmental impact.

Repowering and Innovation in Specialized Training

This ambitious project by Vestas and Iberdrola not only highlights their commitment to sustainability but also underscores the need for highly trained professionals to address industry challenges. That’s why we offer specialized training in renewable energy and occupational safety, with courses like working at heights (IRATA and GWO) and industrial equipment handling, designed to prepare future technicians with internationally recognized certifications.
