The Government of Spain has approved a new Royal Decree regulating marine renewable energy production. This regulatory framework aims to boost the installation of wind farms and other renewable energy sources at sea, optimizing local socioeconomic benefits and reducing environmental impact.
The decree introduces an innovative competitive process to select the best installations, prioritizing criteria such as local job creation and the use of recycled materials, while promoting public dialogue between project developers and affected sectors. This approach seeks to ensure harmonious integration with activities like fishing and navigation, minimizing negative environmental impacts.
The framework also facilitates the development of innovative marine technologies and regulates installations in the State’s General Interest Ports, reinforcing Spain’s commitment to technological innovation and the energy transition.
Spain has ambitious goals for 2030, including reaching 3 GW of offshore wind energy and creating up to 40,000 jobs.
