Good news from Japan! Japan is making a significant step forward in developing the safety and training of its wind energy workforce. The strategic collaboration between the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) and the Japanese Wind Power Association (JWPA) has led to the creation of new guidelines for wind turbine technicians.

The first draft of the JWPA Entry Level Wind Technician Guidelines has already been developed in Tokyo. These guidelines will establish the necessary competencies and required training to perform this important role in the wind industry. The guidelines are expected to be launched after the summer of 2024, guiding both new technicians and their employers towards relevant training standards.

With the need for nearly 4000 new technicians by 2027, this initiative is crucial to meet the growing demand, especially in offshore projects.

Hitoshi Katayama, Vice President of JWPA, stated: “As our country increases its offshore wind capacity, we will increasingly rely on hiring new entry-level technicians. JWPA and GWO are working together to provide clear and effective guidance for training in this critical area.”
