The year 2024 has been historic for renewable energy in the Canary Islands, achieving a production of 1,727,987 MWh by December 3, surpassing the previous record set in 2022. According to Red Eléctrica, this milestone solidifies 2024 as the year with the highest renewable energy generation in the archipelago’s history, with a 7.1% increase compared to the same period last year.

Wind power has been the main driver of this progress, leading the renewable energy mix with a 16.2% share and a 4.6% growth in production compared to 2023. On August 2, 2024, the archipelago recorded its highest renewable energy production day, generating 10,818 MWh, of which 35.6% came from wind energy. Additionally, August set a monthly record with 257,082 MWh generated, covering 32.9% of the archipelago’s energy demand.

Solar photovoltaic energy also made a significant contribution, with a 15.9% increase compared to the previous year. This growth highlights the consolidation of renewable technologies, which now account for over 28% of installed capacity in the islands.

The success of 2024 is attributed to a combination of increased installed capacity and favorable weather conditions, reinforcing the Canary Islands’ role as a leader in the transition to a more sustainable energy model. This record-breaking year demonstrates the tremendous potential of renewables to transform the region’s energy landscape and move toward a cleaner future.
