Germany approved a record number of 2,400 new wind turbines in 2024
The year 2024 marked a milestone for wind energy in Germany, with regulators approving 2,400 new wind turbines. This record highlights the country’s commitment to the energy transition and the strengthening of its electricity supply.
Record Figures in German Wind Energy
According to data from the German Wind Energy Association and the VDMA Power Systems Association, these new turbines will have a total capacity of 14 gigawatts, an 85% increase compared to 2023.
Installation Time
Industry groups reported that, on average, it takes just over two years from approval for a turbine to start generating electricity and connect to the grid.
Key Benefits of Wind Energy
Dennis Rendschmidt, Managing Director of VDMA Power Systems, emphasized that wind energy expansion is crucial for:
- Ensuring the country’s energy supply.
- Reducing electricity costs.
- Creating jobs.
He also stressed that this development must continue regardless of the results of the February 2025 elections.
Installations and Current Capacity
In 2024, 635 new wind turbines were commissioned, with a total capacity of 3.25 gigawatts, representing a 9% decrease compared to the previous year. Despite the decommissioning of older turbines, the net increase was 2.5 gigawatts.
Total Installed Capacity
Germany reached a total installed capacity of 63.5 gigawatts, cementing its position as a leader in onshore wind energy.
Projections for 2025
The sector anticipates a net increase of between 4.8 and 5.3 gigawatts in 2025, reaffirming the country’s commitment to this renewable source.
Contribution to National Electricity
In 2024, onshore wind turbines generated nearly 112 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, accounting for over a quarter of Germany’s total electricity production. This makes wind energy the country’s leading individual source of electricity.
The energy transition in Germany continues to gain momentum, demonstrating that wind energy is essential for a sustainable future.
