What is BR?

The Blade Repair (BR) course is the GWO standard training aimed at wind industry personnel, especially those who work in WTG’s blades inspection and maintenance. In this course, participants will acquire the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to carry out blade repair tasks according to their aerodynamic principles and structural integrity. In this way, wind industry workers will be able to perform these hazardous tasks in a safe manner, following the appropriate safety measures and therefore avoiding the risks GWO has identified for the different repair tasks.

BR course

Blade Repair is a certification that focuses on identifying, controlling and minimizing the risks involved in the inspection and maintainance work of WTG blades. This is an entry level course that does not demand previous experience in blade repair work.

This is a beginner course, designed to provide participants with the necessary skills to perform the technical labour required safely. It is divided in four sections:

  • General safety measures.
  • Personal protective equipment.
  • General technical knowledge.
  • Technical practical lessons.

Module Objectives

The Blade Repair course ensures that, after completion, delegates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate awareness of the course content and the facilities involved to ensure a clear understanding of what is expected during the course.
  • Work safely with applicable chemicals while utilizing the applicable personal protective equipment in a controlled manner throughout all phases of composite inspection and repair work.
  • Explain typical types of composite construction, materials and the importance of surface finish relating to aerodynamic performance and efficiency.
  • Distinguish materials and work safely in a controlled manner with epoxy, polyester, polyurethane, vinyl ester, methacrylate, reinforcement materials and solvents related to composite inspection and repair work.
  • Prepare, operate and maintain the correct tools and equipment, be it electrical or mechanical.
  • Safely execute and document laminate, sandwich panel and surface layer repairs in accordance with a work instruction in glass fibre reinforced composite parts.

Content: train delegates to perform blade repair tasks in an efficient and saf way according to the GWO standards. Having completed the training, delegates will be able to inspect and document the condition of the blades of a WTG, perform maintaince according to instructions. They will be able to do the following:

– Surface repair to pain and gelcoat.
– Trailing edge repairs up to 1,5 m in length.
– Leading edge repairs up to 1,5 m in length.
– Laminate repairs down to the core material.
– Core material replacement up to 220 cm².

By definition, the BST has improved the alignment and quality of safety training because we now have a standard that delivers a baseline of competence. As an owner/operator of wind turbines, we wouldn’t allow anyone to work on site without the certification.
